(English) Archaeology tour across Azerbaijan | Duration: 8 days

Azerbaijan is one of the regions of the Caucasus with the richest and oldest history. In this area the traditions of statehood have been established and civilizations of the ancient East have been in close contact with each other since the ancient times. In this regard, the tourists visiting Azerbaijan in the framework of the archeological tour will see monuments of different times from the settlements of the Neolithic period, up to the cities of the late Middle Ages, as well as will be acquainted with the archaeological researches conducted here by the local and foreign archeologists. During the excursions to the archeological and architectural monuments in small groups you will be able to see Azerbaijan culture with rich history, the historical way that it passed through. It is not accidental, that Azerbaijan ranks the 4th place among the oldest human settlements. The tourists who will visit Azerbaijan in the framework of tour will be acquainted with the artworks created by the ancient human after the Ice Age, will make tours to the architectural monuments, churches and monasteries built in the first times when Christianity spread to the world, will visit archaeological excavation and museum in the city of Kabalaka which was one of the great cities of the region in ancient times and mentioned by the ancient authors in their works. The territory of Azerbaijan which is an Islamic country today, once was one of the areas where the Christian first spread. Here, the first Christian teachings had been taken by Elysee the student of Bartholomew one of the twelve Apostles of Jesus. During the tour a visit to the church founded by Elysee is also expected.

Upon arrival, meet with Archaeology Tour representative and transfer to your hotel. Attend briefing about your journey at 7 pm. Dinner and overnight at hotel.

DAY 2 BAKU/GABALA [209 km]
Drive to the Shamakhi, ancient city of Caucasian Albania. Tour the Museum of Shamakhi. After visit Juma Mosque (8th c.), a first mosque of the Caucasus. Discover the Agsu Medieval Archaeological sites. Then explore Gabala, an ancient city and capital of Caucasus Albania. Gabala ancient city was first mentioned in written sources as Gabalaka, in the encyclopaedic work The Natural History by the famous Roman writer Pliny the Elder in the 1st century AD. Long-term archaeological excavations have determined that Gabala was established as a town in the 4th century BC. It was the capital of Caucasus Albania, until the mid-5th century AD. Later it was one of the provincial towns of Azerbaijan until the mid-18th century AD. Dinner and overnight in Gabala.

Drive to Sheki, one of majestic cities of the East and one of the most ancient cities of Transcaucasia. Explore Caravanserai (18th c), where dealers leading caravans on a great silk way since ancient times liked to stop. View the Palace of Sheki Khans (18th c). Visit the Historical Museum of Sheki. After lunch, discover Kish church.It is one of the most ancient churches in the South Caucasus dated to 1-5 centuries A.D. UNESCO classified this monument as a World Heritage Site. Visit the Fazili (The first museum in the whole labyrinth mounds Tepebashi Necropolis) museum. Dinner and overnight in Sheki.

Drive to Shamkir, a middle age city in Azerbaijan. The Mongols burned the Shamkir and the population exterminated in 13th c.. Visit archaeological complex in Shamkir. Meet with local archaeologists. After lunch, drive to Tovuz city. Discover on of the world`s best archaeological sites Goytepe. Goytepe settlement relating to the early Neolitic period. Dinner and overnight Tovus.

DAY 5 TOVUZ/BAKU [445 km]
In the morning, drive to Baku. Lunch and in overnight Baku hotel. Explore Baku city night excursion. Walk in Seaside Park and along Baku Boulevard, the second largest one in Europe. Dinner on the Caspian Sea.

Explore the site of the ancient city of Baku – Icheri Sheher or «Inner City», whois 2400-year. Visit Walls and Maiden`s Tower, which was built in 12th century. Visit the Palace of the Shirvan shah`s, the biggest monument of the Shirvan-Absheron branch of the Azerbaijan architecture. Admire Juma Mosque`s tiles from 11th century. Enjoy lunch in a local restaurant. Shoping. In the afternoon, drive to Absheron Peninsula and visit Ateshgah, the Fire Worshippers` Temple, located in the village of Surakhany. Visit also well preserved ancient castles of Absheron Peninsula dated 12th-13th c.c. Dinner and overnight in Baku.

In the morning, visit the Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Lanscape. Gobustan one of the most ancient human settlements in the world. Primitive people depicted the art on stones thousands years ago. Then go to the mud vulcanoes. 400 mud volcanoes of world’s 800 mud volcanoes are located in Azerbaijan and Caspian Sea area. Therefore, Azerbaijan sometimes is called as a land of mud volcanoes. Dinner and overnight at hotel.

For the citizens of Russia and CIS countries (except Turkmenistan) visa to Azerbaijan is not required. Citizens of other countries must obtain a visa prior to arrival via the Azerbaijani consulate in their home country or to issue electronic visas through our travel agency.
