Ethnographic tour to The Greater Western Route

Azerbaijan is also a real paradise for ethnographic tourism.   It’s not a secret that Azerbaijan is very rich in historical and cultural places. But in our tour we will see only ethnographic area of Azerbaijan. We will go to Shamakhi and Ismayilli districts and visit to Lahij – a village and municipality on the southern slopes of Greater Caucasus within the Ismailli. We will see Copper craftsman at work in Lahij. During the Medieval Period, Lahij became an important centre of craftsmen in Azerbaijan. Lahij master craftsmen could create forty types of items related to Folk Art. These skilled craftsmen included jewelers, blacksmiths, carpenters, carpet makers, engravers, painters, tanners, shoemakers and bast shoe makers, sock weavers and others. Many valuable examples of the products of these skills are exhibited in famous museums and collections. Then we will go to Baskal – historical silk center of Azerbaijan. After this we will go to Nic village.  Udis  are an ancient native people of the Caucasus. They speak the Udi language. Their religion is Christianity.

After this  We can visit Sheki and Gakh and see Baku museums, theatres, galleries and unique ancient mausoleums. Welcome to Azerbaijan.

DAY 1 ARRIVAL IN BAKU
Upon arrival, meet with Archaeological tour across Azerbaijan representative and transfer to your hotel. Attend briefing about your journey at 7 pm. Dinner and overnight at hotel.

DAY 2 BAKU
Explore the site of the Old city of Baku, whose ,2000-years. Drive through the city to discover the beauty of the city; Flame Towers, Martyr`s Hill, Old City and Baku bulvar. You will also have shopping possibility. Dinner is on your own.

DAY 3 BAKU/ SHAMAKHI [86 km]
In the Morning, drive to the Shamakhi, ancient city of Caucasian Albania. Tour the Museum of Shamakhi. After visit Juma Mosque (8th c.), a first mosque of the Caucasus. After lunch contunie to Lahic, ancient city. There are 7 neighborhoods, 7 springs, 7 mosques, 7 bath-houses surrounded by 7 mountains. Everything in the Lahij is related to the number 7. Dinner and overnight in Lahic.

DAY 4 GABALA/SHEKI [234 km]
After breakfast, drive to Gabala. Gabala is mentioned by Pliny as being a ‘prominent town in Albania’ and certainly dates back as far as the first century AD. Tour the Old Gabala. In afternoon, Visit the Nij, an ancient Cristian community, with – endangered – language. The village of Nij, home to the mysterious and ancient Udi people. Drive to Sheki, one of majestic cities of the East and one of the most ancient cities of Transcaucasia. Dinner and overnight in Sheki.

DAY 5 SHEKI [0 km]
Take a full day to discover Sheki, one of the most beautiful towns in Azerbaijan. Explore Caravanserai (18th c), where dealers leading caravans on a great silk way since ancient times liked to stop. View the Palace of Sheki Khans (18th c). In the afternoon, visit a few kilometres north of Sheki, the attractive, traditionally built stone village of Kish. Visit Kish church. It is one of the most ancient churches in the South Caucasus dated to 1-5 centuries A.D. UNESCO classified this monument as a World Heritage Site. Dinner and overnight.

DAY 6 GAKH/SHEKI

Drive to Gakh, the next town of our tour. Visit the village of Gum and Ilisu Drive to Zagata town. visit the Mukhakh village. the Mukhakh village itself is interesting for its fine examples of traditional village architecturre, sturdily built stone-walled houses with red-brick corners and architraves over the windows. Return to Sheki.

Dinner and overnight.

After breakfast, drive to Baku. Lunch in the Shamakhi. Transfer to Baku Airport for your return flight.

Visa on arrival at the international airports of Azerbaijan can only be obtained by the citizens of Turkey, Israel, UAE, and Japan. For the citizens of Russia and CIS countries (except Turkmenistan) visa to Azerbaijan is not required. Citizens of other countries must obtain a visa prior to arrival via the Azerbaijani consulate in their home country or to issue electronic visas through our travel agency. To obtain a visa, please contact our managers at least 4 weeks prior to arrival to Azerbaijan.
